How to Speed Up a Slow Computer
Is your computer frustratingly slow? Before you think about buying a new one, try these proven methods to breathe new life into your existing computer. Most of these tips are free and easy to do yourself.
Why Do Computers Slow Down?
Computers don't slow down because they get "old." They slow down because of accumulated files, too many programs running, outdated software, or sometimes malware. The good news? Most of these issues are fixable.
Step 1: Restart Your Computer Regularly
This might seem too simple, but restarting your computer clears out temporary files and refreshes system memory. If you haven't restarted in a while, this alone can make a noticeable difference.
Best Practice:
Restart your computer at least once a week. "Sleep" or "Hibernate" mode is convenient, but a full restart clears out things that sleep mode doesn't.
Step 2: Disable Startup Programs
Many programs set themselves to start automatically when your computer turns on. Over time, this can significantly slow down your startup time and overall performance.
How to Disable Startup Programs (Windows 10/11):
- 1.Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- 2.Click on the "Startup" tab
- 3.Look at the "Startup impact" column—focus on "High" items
- 4.Right-click on programs you don't need at startup and select "Disable"
⚠️ Important: Don't disable antivirus programs or anything from Microsoft or your computer manufacturer (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.). When in doubt, leave it enabled.
Common programs safe to disable: Spotify, Discord, Adobe Creative Cloud, Zoom, Microsoft Teams (if you don't use them immediately), Skype, iTunes, game launchers.
Step 3: Clean Up Disk Space
When your hard drive gets too full (especially if it's over 90% full), your computer slows down significantly. Windows needs free space to operate efficiently.
Use Disk Cleanup (Built-in)
- 1. Search for "Disk Cleanup" in Windows
- 2. Select your main drive (usually C:)
- 3. Check boxes for files to delete
- 4. Click "Clean up system files" for more options
- 5. Click OK to delete
Empty the Recycle Bin
Files in your Recycle Bin still take up space. Right-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and select "Empty Recycle Bin."
Tip: Do this monthly to keep space free.
Other Ways to Free Up Space:
- Uninstall programs you no longer use (Settings → Apps)
- Move photos and videos to external drive or cloud storage
- Delete old downloads (check your Downloads folder)
- Clear browser cache and temporary files
Step 4: Keep Windows Updated
Windows updates often include performance improvements and security fixes. While updates can sometimes be annoying, keeping your computer updated helps it run better and stay secure.
How to Check for Updates:
- 1. Click Start → Settings → Windows Update
- 2. Click "Check for updates"
- 3. Install any available updates
- 4. Restart when prompted
Step 5: Check for Malware
Malware (viruses, spyware, adware) can dramatically slow down your computer while running harmful processes in the background.
Windows Defender (Free & Built-in)
Windows 10 and 11 come with excellent built-in protection. Make sure it's enabled: Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection.
Run a Full Scan
Periodically run a full system scan. Go to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan → Scan now. This can take 1-2 hours.
When to Consider Hardware Upgrades
If you've tried everything above and your computer is still slow, it might benefit from a hardware upgrade. These are the most impactful upgrades:
🏆 Best Upgrade: SSD
Replacing a traditional hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD) is the single best upgrade for an old computer. It can make your computer feel 5-10x faster.
Cost: $50-100 for 500GB
💾 More RAM
If your computer has less than 8GB of RAM, adding more can help—especially if you use multiple programs at once.
Cost: $30-60 for 8GB upgrade
Summary: Quick Checklist
- 1Restart your computer weekly
- 2Disable unnecessary startup programs
- 3Run Disk Cleanup and empty Recycle Bin monthly
- 4Keep Windows updated
- 5Run antivirus scans regularly
- 6Consider an SSD upgrade for older computers
